Using charts and graphs to solve problems is important in any job—in fact this skill is the most prevalent in all jobs profiled—more so than Reading or Math!
Providing charts and graphs for learners allows them to begin working with the information to develop this skill.
USA Today provides simple graphics each day related to current events and topics. Have learners examine these graphics and identify key pieces of information and use the key to interpret the material.
Educators and trainers may want to review Targets for Instruction--Locating Information for more tips on developing this skill. 10/16/2008
The Locating Information assessment will be included in the Michigan Merit Examination beginning in 2009. This skill is unfamiliar to most educators. Like other skills, the Locating Information skill can be taught and developed.
Locating Information is the skill people use when they work with graphics such as charts, forms, graphs, tables and diagrams. Individuals are asked to find and insert information into these graphics. At higher levels, they must compare, summarize and analyze information.
Check back often for tips on preparing students for this assessment. 10/6/2008High school seniors who attend schools in the MMIT region (Bay, Arenac, Clinton, Eaton, Genesee, Huron, Ingham, Lapeer, Livingston, Midland, Saginaw, Sanilac, Shiawasee and Tuscola) are eligible to take the Locating Information assessment and receive a NCRC. Schools should plan to administer assessments between January 1 and February 11, 2009. For more information, contact Cindy Leyrer at cleyrer@inghamisd.org5/13/2008At the Mid-Michigan 2008 Spring Showcase on May 12, 2008, David Hollister announced that MMIT would fund the Locating Information assessment and certificates in 2009. This includes all seniors in the MMIT region. For more information about MMIT please visit www.midmiinnovationteam.org
5/4/2008The National WorkKeys Conference was a great experience for those of us who have attended this conference in the past, and for the growing number of new attendees. Over half of the total conference attendees had never attended past conferences--this demonstrates the "buzz" that has developed over the National Career Readiness Certificate.
ACT gave Michigan a 'Special Recognition' for the grassroots efforts you have all been a part of, and mentioned how quickly and efficiently our state has come up to speed. Congratulations to all the hard work you have done to make this possible! 4/2/2008
The Mid-Michigan Innovation Team (MMIT) project will wrap up soon. Prima Civitas, with support from Michigan State University, has provided funding for seniors to take the Locating Information assessment, and receive National Career Readiness Certificates. Approximately 12,000 high school students in the MMIT region were offered the opportunity to earn the NCRC.
The number and level of certificates earned will be available early next month.
3/28/2008The Implementation Team Leaders and ACT staff are working to create a compreshensive list of Michigan NCRC/WorkKeys contacts. Jamee Pugh at ACT started with HUGE databases from Steve Anderson, John Nelson and KeyTrain. Also included were all the names of folks who have attended Michigan WorkKeys conferences and other NCRC meetings. As one might imagine, there are duplications, omissions and incomplete contact data. This has been a daunting task, and we all commend Jamee for her hard work.
As the lists are cleaned up, Jamee and/or Steve will be making personal contact with each person inviting them to SIGN UP on this website and attend the regional Implementation Team meetings. Building the network will ensure all stakeholders are involved, and assist to maintain one common list of "NCRC Champions" in Michigan.
